For the last 45 years I have been involved in the real estate business. In 1970 I got interested in doing commercial real estate appraisals. I got a real boost when I won the Farm Service Agency appraisal account to do their agriculture appraisals across the State of Alabama. The contract was renewed for several years so I have appraised farm property in almost every county in Alabama.
As an aside, my hobby since my early 20’s has been flying. I bought my first airplane, with a partner, at age 25 and until age 70 I always had one or two airplanes. When I was doing the Farm Service Appraisals, I had an open cock pit biplane for the summer appraisals to travel to South Alabama and a four-place plane for winter or bad weather. As a family we used the planes to visit my parents in California and to travel the Caribbean and all around the country.
Many years ago, when the State of Alabama started requiring a license to do appraisals I qualified for commercial and residential and have held a license since then. One of the major requirements for a license is 28 hours of continuing education each two years which I have complied with or exceeded since day one of the license requirement. All my appraisals are certified and comply with USPAP, “Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice”.
Over the years I have gained experience appraising almost any type of commercial property, such as hotels, multifamily, offices, retail stores, convenience stores, sub-division development and almost any kind of industrial or manufacturing facility. I maintain my license and errors and omissions insurance and hope to do so until the Master calls me home.
My primary area of operation is North Alabama, anything north of Birmingham. I still do appraisals in South Alabama but must have an additional fee because of travel and additional research requirements.
